In this interview with Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien, the two designers talk about creativity, enjoyment and their creative process: “If you need to be creative, you’re not happy unless you are creative.”

Jonathan Levien explains how they studied the broad discipline of furniture design, which includes both the object, the space it occupies, the atmosphere and the human form as it is framed by the surroundings. It is a “coming together of different worlds” in order to create poetic objects, rather than products. Nipa Doshi explains: Our world is so ugly, to not change anything would be like death. Doshi Levien are searching for beauty in a broader sense. ”We live in the material world – designing seems a valid way to make a living.”

Indian Nipa Doshi (b. 1971) and Scottish Jonathan Levien (b. 1972) met as students at the Royal College of Art in London. In 2000 they opened their joint design studio Doshi Levien, which has garnered great acclaim.
